Maintaining the cleanliness of your Tesla Model X is vital, but once it is wrapped, your cleaning routine needs to change. While you can take a wrapped car to certain types of car washes, automatic brush car washes should be strictly avoided.
The Danger of Friction Washes
Standard automatic car washes use heavy, rotating brushes that are often filled with grit from previous vehicles. These brushes act like sandpaper on vinyl, causing “swirl marks,” scratches, and potentially lifting the edges of the wrap. Over time, these washes will dull the finish of even the highest-quality films.
Safe Washing Options
To keep your wrap looking like new, consider these alternatives:
- Hand Washing (Best): The safest method is a traditional two-bucket hand wash using a pH-neutral soap. This allows you to be gentle around the edges and sensors of the Model X.
- Touchless Car Washes: If you are in a hurry, a touchless car wash (which uses high-pressure water jets and chemicals rather than brushes) is a safer alternative. However, be cautious of extremely high water pressure and harsh detergents, which can eventually degrade the vinyl.
- Waterless/Rinseless Wash: For light dust, a high-quality waterless wash spray and microfiber towels are excellent for maintaining the shine without a full hose-down.
Important Precautions
If you use a pressure washer at home, keep the nozzle at least 12 inches away from the surface and avoid aiming it directly at the edges of the vinyl panels. High pressure can force water under the film, causing it to bubble or peel. For the best results, always dry the car with a clean microfiber towel to prevent water spots, especially on matte or satin finishes.
