Can a wrapped trailer go through a carwash?

Taking a wrapped trailer through a standard automated commercial carwash—especially one with large, spinning brushes—is generally not recommended, as these systems can be too aggressive for the vinyl and may cause irreversible damage. While a wrapped trailer can be cleaned, you must be cautious about how you clean it to protect its longevity.

The Risks of Automated Washes

  • Abrasive Brushes: The heavy-duty brushes in many carwashes can catch the edges of the vinyl, causing it to peel or lifting. Furthermore, the bristles can create “swirl marks” or fine scratches in the laminate, dulling the finish over time.
  • Harsh Chemicals: Some automated washes use highly acidic or alkaline detergents to strip grime quickly. These chemicals can dry out the vinyl and cause the colors to fade prematurely.
  • High-Pressure Sprays: If a pressure washer is held too close to a seam or a rivet, the force can drive water underneath the vinyl, destroying the adhesive bond and causing “fingering” or bubbling.

The Best Way to Wash

The safest method for cleaning a wrapped trailer is a traditional hand wash using a soft sponge and a pH-neutral automotive soap. If you must use a pressure washer, keep the pressure below 2,000 PSI, use a wide-angle spray nozzle, and maintain a distance of at least 12 inches from the surface. Always spray perpendicular to the surface rather than at an angle toward the edges. For those who want the convenience of a carwash, a “touchless” wash is the only safe automated option, as it relies on water spray rather than mechanical brushes, though hand washing remains the gold standard for wrap care.
