The short answer is yes, but with major caveats. While you can technically take a wrapped van through certain types of car washes, it is not the recommended method for cleaning. To maximize the life of your vinyl and keep the graphics looking sharp, you should be very selective about how you wash your vehicle.
The Risks of Automatic Car Washes
Standard automatic car washes that use large, spinning plastic brushes are generally unsafe for wrapped vans. These brushes can be highly abrasive, catching the edges of the vinyl or scratching the protective laminate. Over time, these brushes can cause the wrap to dull, swirl, or even begin peeling at the seams.
Safe Alternatives
- Hand Washing: This is the gold standard. Using a soft sponge or microfiber mitt with a dedicated automotive detergent is the safest way to clean your van.
- Brushless/Touchless Car Washes: These systems use high-pressure water jets and chemicals instead of physical brushes. These are generally safe for wrapped vehicles, though the chemicals used can sometimes be a bit harsh if used too frequently.
- Pressure Washing: You can pressure wash a wrap, but you must be careful. Keep the pressure below 2,000 psi, use a wide spray pattern, and keep the nozzle at least 12 inches away from the surface. Never aim the jet directly at the edges of the vinyl.
Cleaning Tips for Wraps
- Wash Weekly: Do not let dirt, grime, or fuel spills sit on the vinyl for long periods.
- Spot Clean: Use a mixture of isopropyl alcohol and water to gently clean bird droppings or tree sap as soon as you see them.
- Avoid Wax: Never use wax or polishes on matte or textured wraps, as this will ruin the finish. For glossy wraps, only use waxes specifically labeled as safe for vinyl.
