The short answer is yes, you can and should wash a wrapped truck. Keeping the vinyl clean is the single most important thing you can do to extend its lifespan. However, you cannot treat a wrapped truck exactly like a painted one. Vinyl is a specialized film that requires a slightly gentler touch to prevent lifting, scratching, or dulling the finish.
Best Practices for Washing
- Hand Washing is King: The safest method is the traditional two-bucket hand wash. Use a soft microfiber mitt and a pH-neutral automotive soap specifically designed for wraps or high-quality paint.
- Pressure Washing Precautions: You can use a pressure washer, but you must be careful. Keep the pressure below 2,000 PSI, use a wide-angle spray tip, and stay at least 12 inches away from the surface. Most importantly, never aim the nozzle directly at the edges or seams of the wrap, as the high-pressure water can force its way under the vinyl and cause it to lift.
- Avoid Brush Car Washes: Never take a wrapped truck through an automated car wash with mechanical brushes. These brushes are often filled with grit from previous vehicles and can cause “swirl marks” or deep scratches in the vinyl.
Dealing with Tough Contaminants
If you encounter bird droppings, tree sap, or bug splatter, it is important to address them immediately. These substances are acidic and can “etch” the vinyl if left in the sun. Soak the spot with warm, soapy water to loosen the debris before gently wiping it away. For matte or textured wraps, avoid using any waxes or polishes, as these products are designed for gloss finishes and can create uneven shiny spots on your matte wrap that are impossible to remove.
