Do I need to tell the DMV if I wrap my car?

You typically do not need to report a routine vinyl wrap unless it noticeably changes your vehicle’s primary color in a way that the DMV considers a “color change.” A wrap that closely matches your car’s factory color or covers a small area without altering the overall hue is usually not required to be reported. If your wrap is a bold, distinct color that makes the vehicle appear to have a new primary color, many states require some form of notification—often as a “change of vehicle color” report or a registration amendment.

Technically, your vehicle registration includes a “color” field that identifies your car to law enforcement and the DMV. If you perform a “permanent” color change—such as a full wrap that changes a white car to matte black—most states, including Florida, recommend updating your registration. This ensures that if a police officer runs your license plate, the vehicle description matches what they see on the road, preventing unnecessary confusion or delays during a traffic stop.

Updating your registration is usually a simple process. In many cases, you can update the color when you renew your annual registration at your local tax collector’s office. There is typically a nominal fee for a corrected registration card. However, many enthusiasts choose not to update the DMV for temporary changes, such as partial wraps, accent pieces, or commercial graphics that don’t fundamentally change the primary color of the vehicle.

It is also important to consider your insurance provider. While you may not always be legally required to tell the DMV for a temporary wrap, you should absolutely notify your insurance company. A high-quality wrap is a valuable addition to the vehicle, and in the event of an accident, you want to ensure the cost of re-wrapping the affected panels is covered. At Precision Auto Wraps, we always recommend being transparent with both the DMV and your insurer to ensure your investment is fully protected and legally compliant.
